Not sure of the COVID-19 Vaccine? Here are some biggest Myths and Fears busted!

There is a lot of misinformation on the Covid-19 Vaccine that might hurt the progress we are making to get back to the pre-pandemic world. Here are a few myths busted to help you decide on getting vaccinated!

Not sure of the COVID-19 Vaccine? Here are some biggest Myths and Fears busted!

The pandemic has taken the world under its grasp, and the lockdown had adverse effects on the economy. Everyone was praying for an effective vaccine to be developed soon, but now that it is here, there are many misconceptions about it. Fake news on social media has added fuel to this fire, and because of these widespread myths, people are reluctant to take the vaccine. We need to realize that Covid-19 is no joke, and a vaccination drive and herd immunity is our best chance to defeat or even eradicate the disease (unless new strains keep coming up every other day).

Keeping this in mind, here are a few myths that we have busted for you to get a better idea about the vaccine.

Myth – The vaccines were developed too fast, hence they are unsafe.

Fact: Yes, the vaccines were developed in a record-breaking time, but that does not mean that they are unsafe. No stage in the development of the vaccine was skipped, and because the entire world was working on it simultaneously, it was possible to get it developed in much less time. The vaccine has been tested on tens of thousands of volunteers during the clinical trials, and it is 95?fective with no serious or life-threatening side effects.

Myth – The vaccine can alter the genetic code.

Fact: Scientists have used mRNA technology to develop the virus. Many people fear that it will alter the genetic code. While mRNA is a portion of the genetic code that teaches cells how to make proteins, it never enters the nucleus of the cell (where the DNA is contained). Thus, the mRNA never comes in contact with a person's DNA and there is no chance for the DNA/genetic code to be altered.

Myth – One can get Covid-19 from the vaccine.

Fact: Many people think that one can contract the virus from the vaccine. This myth can be busted by explaining how vaccines work. Vaccines introduce either dead or a highly weakened form of the virus into the body thus making our immune system acquainted with the particular virus. This helps the body to be ready if somehow a living virus enters the body and destroys the virus before it can cause any harm. In short, the vaccine cannot give the disease because it does not contain a living virus. Rather, it protects you against the disease.

Myth – The people who have already been cured of Covid-19 do not need the vaccine.

Fact: While people who have been infected by Covid-19 already have developed some immunity against it, there is no certainty on how long this natural protection will last. In addition to this, even if these people do not get sick themselves, they can still be carriers and transmit the virus to their loved ones. Hence, vaccination is necessary.

Myth – Once vaccinated, one need not wear masks.

Fact: Herd immunity has not been achieved yet and we do not know much about the longevity of the immunity we get after vaccination. Thus, wearing masks becomes important. Vaccination is essential to saving lives, but it is not a substitute for social distancing norms or wearing masks.

Myth – It is unknown how long the vaccine will provide immunity, so it’s useless.

Fact: Yes, we don’t know how long the immunity from the vaccine will last. But what we know is that it is effective and that is what matters. Just because we might have to take the shots every few months/years, doesn’t mean we won’t take the shots at all. Just treat it like your yearly flu shots.

We hope these facts have helped you understand more about the vaccine. For more information, you can check out this interview with an esteemed doctor, and clarify more doubts. We urge you to not believe in myths and make an informed decision.
